Focus Topic: OpenAI’s family guide is a reminder to talk with teens about AI - not down to them

Amid lawsuits and headlines, OpenAI has quietly released something that deserves more attention: two guides to help teenagers and parents understand and use AI responsibly. These materials explain how ChatGPT works, what it’s good at, where it can go wrong, and most importantly – how to have open conversations at home about it.

The teen-friendly guide helps young users understand things like AI “hallucinations,” how prompting works, and how to fact-check results. It’s simple but clear: ChatGPT is not a magical answer machine – it’s a pattern-based generator that sometimes gets things right and sometimes doesn’t. Encouraging teens to question, verify, and think critically is core to this resource.

Meanwhile, the guide for parents offers conversation starters and boundary-setting ideas. Instead of pushing fear, it promotes curiosity and collaboration – suggesting parents ask “Can you show me how you use ChatGPT?” instead of interrogating or forbidding it. The goal: keep trust intact, encourage balanced use, and recognize that AI tools are already part of young people’s lives.

And I’ll add my five cents here: it’s refreshing to see OpenAI think about the next generation amidst all the corporate chaos. If you’re a parent, please don’t treat AI like it’s forbidden fruit. Talk about it openly, calmly, and regularly. AI isn’t going anywhere – the smart move is to embrace it together and make your kids part of the learning journey.

A good way to go through these resources is NotebookLM, just upload them and create a podcast or video overview to go through with your kids or slides, mind map, infographics, flashcards etc. You can check out mine here.
