Focus Topic: OpenAI’s new identity – from profit to purpose?

One of the most significant shifts in the AI world this week comes from OpenAI, which has now officially completed its transition into a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC). At the heart of this change is the newly formed OpenAI Foundation, which holds equity in the for-profit arm currently valued at approximately $130 billion, making it one of the most well-funded philanthropic organizations in history.

The Foundation will direct an initial $25 billion toward two critical areas: accelerating health breakthroughs like better diagnostics and treatments, and developing technical solutions for AI resilience – a cybersecurity-like layer aimed at protecting systems as AI scales globally. This builds on earlier initiatives like the $50M People-First AI Fund.

A major shift also occurred in OpenAI’s key partnership: Microsoft’s ownership has dropped from 32.5% to around 27%, though they retain exclusive technology and model rights through 2032, even after AGI arrives. The companies now have more flexibility to work with third parties, and Microsoft can independently pursue AGI if it chooses.

This restructuring signals a growing emphasis on long-term public value, not just commercial dominance. Whether OpenAI can truly deliver on that mission remains to be seen, but it’s now officially structured to try.
