Focus Topic: What Claude is really used for - Anthropic’s AI usage report explained

We talk a lot about what AI could do. But what is it actually doing today?

Anthropic just released its first large-scale report on Claude’s real-world usage, based on over 2 million user sessions. This isn’t a vision document – it’s a data-driven look at how people and companies are using Claude right now.

The findings are surprisingly grounded. Most users still rely on Claude for coding, admin work, writing, and coursework. Over 50% of conversations are about augmenting human work – not full automation. But in enterprise settings (through Claude’s API), automation dominates, especially for repetitive office tasks.

The report also shows that AI is not replacing all jobs – it’s replacing tasks. For example, Claude is helping teachers with grading and research, but not with in-class teaching. It’s automating data entry but not negotiations. In many jobs, that means either deskilling (less creative work left for the human) or upskilling (humans shift to harder tasks).

Geographically, AI usage is concentrated in richer countries, where people use Claude more for personal productivity. In lower-income countries, the focus is more on education and coding. Anthropic calls this pattern a sign that AI adoption depends more on education and skills than just access.

So what’s the takeaway? Claude isn’t taking over yet. But it’s already reshaping how people work – and which tasks stay human.
